don’t panic! – some clues for the second paper

These are some notes from Narrativa’s class which may help me someway with my Second Paper. In fact, I’m starting to have an idea of how I’m going to do it.

Intro:

Dialog with the text: inhabiting the text and creating opinions from different perspectives. We become co-authors of the text by readingn it- We have to look at the text using our knowledge, our traditions. With this we can be able to discover a new topography of those words we are reading.
Electronic writing is a drifferent kind of writing, and we have to re-learn how to read.

Clues for the Second Paper:

-What are the elements the author uses for you to know where to click?
– What has the author added to the traditional writing method?
– What are the rules the author is using? Do we understand them?
* You have to go by the rules the author stablish. You can decide the path you wanna follow, but that can be a mess.
– Is that hypertext a narrative space where you feel confortable to participate and keep reading?
– We have to create hypothesis about the rules the author is using, and we can have several hypothesis.
– Is the author using a linear way? non-linear?How do we read the hypertext?
– How’s the linking of the text?
* We have to find the rules the author has stablished to read the text, and so we’ll be able to understand the text.
– Produce an inventory to know what the reading is about: with it you will develop an idea of what’s the text about, and you have to decide how you want to read (interpretate) the text.
– Re-writing the hypertext with your own words
– The more info you manage the more info you’ll have for your interpretation.
– Give examples!, you use the hypertext to prove your point of view, your interpretation.
-What are the elements the author is using?

OMG, I have so much work to do!

who is Travis Alber (Second Paper)

Before sending an e-mail to Mrs. Alber I’ve looked for some info about her, and I’ve found this description of “Who is Flora” made by her in Rhizome, with a biography :

by Travis Alber

Description

We are surrounded by pieces of the past—concrete messages from lives that have gone before us. Yet these artifacts are largely ignored in our world of planned obsolescence and digital communication. Who Is Flora combines unsuspecting messages from a past life, my interpretations of those messages, and a computer interface through which to understand them.

In the summer of 1998 I discovered a number of postcards from the year 1942. They were sent by a twenty-something woman named Flora who traveled the United States alone, sending postcards to her family. The postcards moved me because Flora and I have many things in common: our ages, upbringing, and struggles, and our travels. This piece focuses on studying the cards, the messages they shared, and my own impressions gathered from them. I was able to categorize the cards into four dominant themes: age, sense of place, time, and communication (primarily with family), and from those themes I created a storyline. The storyline here deals with the marriage of a friend and the tension between independence and love.

Who Is Flora was originally completed with two main storylines, as an interactive CD-ROM using Macromedia Director, but was later modified and re-released using Flash.

Rhizome Terms: animation, Flash, gender, Historical, identity, Internet, memory, Narrative

Artist Terms: 1942, Americana, Arkansas, Copper Harbor, Dayton, Flora, IL, interactive story, Little Rock, Michigan, mid-century, MidWest, New Jersey, nostalgia, Ohio, past, Peoria, postcard, progressive narrative, Seaside Heights, self-discovery, travel, West Texas

music! ( Second Paper)

As one of the tools the author uses is music, I’m thinking about adding some music to my second paper. As Fores said it had to have some elements from the hypertext, that’s gonna be one of them. And, I’ve been looking for some american music from the 40’s. First, in google, with the keyword: “american music 40’s” I’ve found this site:  http://kclibrary.lonestar.edu/decade40.html about American History and has a Music section. I’ve been visiting some pages there appear from some artists of the 40’s, and also I’ve learnt a little bit about the music scene of that time. But, as the thing I want is a file, an mp3, or even a midi from a song, I’ve opened my Soulseek, and I’ve searched for the keyword: 1940. I’ve found a lot of albums from that time. Now I just have to wait for them to download, and then I’ll listen to the songs to decide which feets better in my site.

By the way, Soulseek is a free sharing aplication, where you can share your files and take others people files. From user to user. It is a lovely tool for dowloading music. I would love to say I buy music, but, that won’t be honest. I’m also a musician, and I share my music for free on the internet, because I think that’s the future.  I could buy the mp3’s on itunes or some place like that, but, why ? If I can get them for free..

Well, what I think is the future is this idea from the Last.fm group, which has just started working. Have a look at it, it is very interesting from my point of view.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS (Second Paper)

First of all, i’ve got to say I really like the Hypertext I’ve choosen.

Who is Flora?” from Travis Alber.

The first time I saw it I was like: ok this is it!The hyoertext I was looking for. It starts with a kind of presentation with some good old music , (made up with Flash, I guess). “Who was Flora?, Where she did she travel in 1942?“. That catched my eye completely, and made me really wanna read that introduction next to a picture of who it seemed to be that misterious Flora.

I read a little bit about the making of Who is Flora, and found out it is a “true” story. As it says in the introduction, Flora died in 1998, and the author found a box of postcards sent by Flora when she was exploring the United States in the 40’s. So, this Flora really existed, and this hypertext seems to be a recopilation, or a reconstruction of Flora’s trip by the postcards she sent while she was exploring the united statets by herself. Let me say that this is beatiful, and, I gotta send an email to the author to let her know how much I like her idea.

But the good thing about this hypertext is not only the idea, that awesome initiative of the author of making a literary hypertext with a pile of old postcards sent by a woman who was dead, and she didn’t even know her; it is also awesome the way she “makes” this story virtual. Because, if the introduction was amazing and eye-catching, wait to see the hypertext itself. The way the author builds up the story with all those postcards, and the tools she uses, are just perfect.

He sort of transports you to the places where Flora went during her trip.

I’m back! after all of these days without writing a thing here. I gotta start working on my Second paper for Narrativa and Métodos.

I’ve added a new gadgetr to my blog that I discovered the other day. It is a tool to see who’s visiting my blog and where is that visitor from. It is nothing but curiosity, that’s all it is for.

So, my next post will be about work, and work. I gotta say I’m very happy about the hypertext I’ve choosen for my Secondpaper.

Author: Travis Alber, ” Who is Flora?

The aspect I’m going to work about is TOOLS. This hypertext uses a lot of tools, so I better start soon working on it!

Have a nice weekend to everyone!

(I’m not sure anyone is gonna read this, but just in case)

Text 04- The Search for Reader-Centered Hypertext by Craig Branham

Main ideas:

Appears the term WREADER. Hypertexts are collaborative between readers and writers.  This wreader  rearranges or complements the text and so achieves the status of co-author.  A hypertext is a representation of the reader’s understanding; a mental scheme, a synthesis of ideas from diverse sources in the reader’s memory ( physical text and the reader’s understanding of it).

Links can be organizational/ referential .

05 – John Ruskin(Narrativa) – (FirstPaper)

As I’m finishing my FirstPaper of narrativa, I’m realizing that  all of the work  I’ve done searching for info about John Ruskin  is not showed on my web site. I mean, I found like 20 pages (well, maybe less, I always exaggerate with numbers) and from all those pages, only 2 or 3 were worthy. The rest of the pages were just using the same info as the Wikipedia. And of course, there were like a hundred more where you had to pay for the info.

Another point is that, I said I was going to work about 3 different aspects of John Ruskin, and I’ve finally ruled out the Articles wirtten by the author’s one because there are no articles at all.  All that he has is books; books with critiques about a lot of things, but no articles at all. And that’s another point: I’ve been looking for articles, and as I couldn’t find any I had to leave it blank on the web page. And after doing that i write in “Auto-evaluation” an A” ! .. Well, yes, I think I deserve that “A”, but the teacher and the rest of the class is gonna say: hey , where are those articles at??.

What I mean with all of this is that, this blog is finally becoming the most important tool of the subject. Where is the teacher going to see all of the work I’ve been doing all of these days? Aha!

So, my firstpaper is going to be like this: the works of John Ruskin (just the good pages) in english and spanish; no articles; the translations ; and I’ll add a new aspect: pictures!, where I’ll add all of the pictures I found of John Ruskin, mainly on Google images, with links to the pages from where I got them.

The Final Countdown!

Next thursday is the day. I haven’t finished yet reading all of the texts, as I have A LOT to read ( 2 subjects= more than 14 texts).

Anyway, that’s not what I was going to talk about. Good news! As I couldn’t use my “mural.uv.es” because it is kinda broken, Vicente told me I could publish my web pages somewhere else, so I’m finally working in my site!. But that doesn’t mean I’m not using this blog anymore; on the contrary, I’m gonna keep using it as this is the perfect tool for me.

So, I gotta keep readin articles like mad, and maybe I won’t be able to talk about them all here as time is ticking.

And also I wanted to recommend  Steven Krause’s blog. I’ve been following it these days. I find it very interesting, and specially because the North American elections are taking part tomorrow and Steven has keeped me very informed about it all there in his blog. Check it out!

* About the  “guide” I created : I’ve finally been able  to try it today, and I think it works.

Tick Tack Tick Tack…
